Berkeley is a central location that has an excellent variety of hotels and dining options, as well as easy access to San Francisco, several major universities, museums, research centers, and national parks.

Weather: September is an exceptionally pleasant time of year in the San Francisco Bay area. Days are typically warm and clear and evenings are cool. Rain is a rarity at this time of year.

Major Universities and Research Facilities: In addition to the University of California, Berkeley, the conference venue is close to UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Francisco, Stanford University, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Lawrence Hall of Science. In addition, the Stanford Linear Accelerator and the Berkeley Advanced Light Source, built upon the site of Ernest Lawrence°s 184-inch cyclotron, are available for tours.

Sporting events: The area has professional baseball (the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics) and football (the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders) teams that are in season during the conference. A group outing to an evening baseball game can easily be arranged.

Excursions: This is an ideal venue for pre- and post-conference sightseeing. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Point Reyes National Seashore, Yosemite National Park, and the Napa Valley wine country are all within driving distance. There are many opportunities for local sightseeing in Berkeley and San Francisco.
